Anche note come “le Leggi dell’Arte” o “I Decreti”
Le famose leggi della discordia che secondo alcuni furono la causa dell'allontanamento della Valiente dalla congrega di Gardner. In effetti essa non ha mai queste "regole" che Gardner inserì nella sua Tradizione improvvisamente e senza poter dare spiegazione sul da dove derivassero. La Valiente in più interviste ribadisce la sua diffidenza verso queste Leggi che anche oggi, dopo ricerche e analisi, risultano essere un insieme di consigli e dottrine sparsi e riuniti.
E' comunque interessante notare l'uso originale dei termini, oggi spesso confuso dai sedicenti wiccan. Il singolare è infatti detto wica (o wicca poi, pronuncia: uica o uicca e non vica o vicca!!) mentre wiccan è, com'è sempre stato, il plurale. Nella traduzione si è voluto conservare l'originale e non trasportarlo nello sgradevole italianismo wiccano/wiccani che non ha motivo di esistere, o dovremmo definire il culto "wiccanesimo", il che è chiaramente ridicolo!!

Lo Wica dovrebbe venerare gli Dei ed obbedire alla loro volontà. Così sia, perché ciò è stato fatto per il bene degli Wiccan. Dunque l’adorazione degli Wiccan è bene per gli Dei
Poichè gli Dei amano gli Wica, come un uomo ama una donna sottomettendola/guidandola. Perciò gli Wica dovrebbero amare gli Dei, che li guidano. Ed è necessario che il Cerchio, Tempio degli Dei, sia davvero creato e purificato, affinché sia un luogo adatto per l’ingresso degli Dei.
E lo Wica stesso deve essere preparato e purificato nel giusto modo, per entrare in presenza degli Dei. Con l’amore e la devozione nel cuore, trarrà potere dal proprio corpo per donare potere agli Dei, come ci è stato insegnato fin dall’antichità.
Perchè in questo modo solo l’uomo può entrare in comunione con gli Dei, giacché gli Dei non possono aiutare l’uomo senza l’aiuto degli uomini.
E l’Alta Sacerdotessa guiderà la sua Congrega in rappresentanza della Dea e l’Alto Sacerdote la sosterrà in rappresentazione del Dio. E l’Alta Sacerdotessa sceglierà colui il quale essa desidera, che sia del giusto rango, come suo Alto Sacerdote.
Giacchè il Dio stesso le baciò i piedi nella quintuplice benedizione, deponendo il suo potere ai piedi della Dea, in virtà della di lei giovinezza e bellezza, della dolcezza e della gentilezza, della sapienza e della giustizia, dell’umiltà e generosità. Perciò egli affidò la sua sovranità nelle mani di lei, ma la Sacerdotessa deve sempre ricordare che ogni potere le giunge da lui. Viene dato solo perché venga usato con saggezza ed equità. E la più grande virtù di un’Alta Sacerdotessa è il riconoscere che è necessaria la giovinezza per rappresentare la Dea, così ella saprà ritirarsi con grazia in favore di una donna più giovane, qualora così la Congrega decida riunita in Concilio. Poiché l’Alta Sacerdotessa comprende che abbandonare graziosamente la propria posizione elevata è una delle maggiori virtù e che ella riavrà il suo alto rango in un’altra vita, con una bellezza ancor più potente.
Nei giorni in cui la Stregoneria regnava ovunque, eravamo liberi di venerare (gli Dei) nei più grandi Templi. Ma, in questi giorni infelici dobbiamo serbare il segreto sui nostri sacri misteri.
Così sia, nessun altro eccetto gli Wica possa vedere I nostri misteri, poiché numerosi sono I nostri nemici, e la tortura ha sciolto molte lingue. Così sia, che ciascuna Congrega non sappia dove l’altra risieda o chi ne faccia parte, eccetto il Sacerdote e la Sacerdotessa. Che non vi siano contatti tra di esse, eccetto che per il Messaggero degli Dei o il Convocante. Possano le Congreghe incontrarsi in un luogo sicuro, solo se ciò non presenta pericoli, per i grandi Festival. E, una volta là, nessuno dirà da dove viene o rivelerà il proprio vero nome.
Affinchè, se torturato, neppure in agonia nessuno possa dire ciò che non sa.
Così sia, che nessuno possa parlare dell’Arte che appartiene alla Wica, né rivelare alcun nome, o dove gli Wica vivano, o in nessun modo dire nulla che possa denunciare qualcuno ai nostri nemici. Né possano rivelare in quale luogo sia la Congrega, o quando si riunisce, o dove, o che vi siano stati degli incontri. E se qualcuno infrangerà queste leggi, sia pure sotto tortura, la Maledizione della Dea cadrà su di lui e non potrà mai rinascere sulla terra e possa egli restare al luogo cui appartiene, nell’Inferno dei Cristiani.
Che ogni Sacerdotessa guidi la sua Congrega con Giustizia ed Amore, con l’aiuto ed il consiglio degli anziani, sempre prestando ascolto al Messaggero degli Dei, se egli viene.
Ella terrà conto di ogni lagnanza dei fratelli e si adopererà per appianare ogni contrasto tra di essi. Bisogna tuttavia riconoscere che vi sono persone che sempre faranno di tutto per cercar di costringere altri a fare ciò che essi vogliono.
Non necessariamente sono malvagi e spesso sono portatori di buone idee, che dovrebbero essere condivise durante il concilio. E se non saranno in armonia con i loro fratelli, o se dichiarano ‘ Io non lavorerò sotto questa Alta Sacerdotessa’, questa è sempre stata l’antica legge, per il bene della fratellanza e per evitare dispute, potranno dichiarare di voler fondare una nuova Congrega poiché vivono ad oltre una lega dalla sede della Congrega, o che stanno per farlo. Chiunque viva nell’ambito di una congrega e desideri formare un’altra, per evitare conflitti, parlerà agli Anziani delle proprie intenzioni ed all’istante lascerà libero il proprio posto e si sposterà nella nuova. I membri della vecchia Congrega possono unirsi alla nuova, quando questa venga formata, ma in tal caso debbono abbandonare completamente la vecchia. Gli Anziani delle Nuove e delle Vecchie Congreghe devono incontrarsi in pace ed amore fraterno, per stabilire i nuovi confini.
Coloro che, appartenenti all’Arte, dimorano al di fuori di entrambe le Congreghe, possono unirsi indifferentemente all’una o all’altra, ma non ad entrambe. Se gli Anziani approvano, tutti possono incontrarsi in occasione dei Grandi Festival, se ciò viene fatto in pace e con amore fraterno, ma la scissione di una Congrega spesso significa discordia. Per questa ragione nell’antichità vennero create queste leggi. E possa la maledizione della Dea abbattersi su chiunque le infranga. Così sia.
Se volete tenere un libro, che sia scritto di vostro pugno, lasciate pure che I fratelli e le sorelle copino ciò che desiderano, ma non permettete che cada in altre mani che le vostre, e non trattenete mai gli scritti di qualcun altro, poiché - se si scoprisse di chi sono – costui potrebbe facilmente essere catturato e torurato.
Ciascuno deve custodire I propri scritti e distruggerli qualora il pericolo sia incombente. Apprendete quanto più possibile con il vostro cuore e, quando la minaccia è passata, riscrivete il vostro libro che così sarà salvo. Poiché, qualora venisse trovato, costituirebbe una chiara prova contro di voi ed i nostri oppressori ben lo sanno ‘Di certo tu non sei l’unica strega’, dunque tutti i vostri cari ed i vostri amici correrebbero il rischio di essere torturati. Per questo motivo distruggete qualunque cosa sia non necessaria. Se il vostro libro viene trovato su di voi, costituirà una chiara prova a vostro carico. Potreste essere torturati. Allontanate dalla vostra mente qualunque pensiero sull’Arte. Dite di aver avuto degli incubi e che un demonio vi ha costretto a scrivere cose di cui non sapete nulla. Pensate a voi stessi. Io non so nulla. Io non ricordo nulla. Ho dimenticato tutto. Tenetelo bene a mente.
Se la tortura fosse insopportabile, dite, io confesserò. Non riesco a tollerare questo tormento, cosa volete che dica? Lo dirò. Se cercano di farvi parlare della fratellanza, NON FATELO. Ma se tentano di farvi parlare di cose assurde ed impossibili come il volare, l’unirsi in matrimonio con il Diavolo Cristiano, il sacrificare bambini, o mangiare carne umana, per ottenere la cessazione delle torture, dite ‘Ho fatto un sogno demoniaco, non ero in me. Ero impazzito.
Non tutti i Magistrati sono crudeli, se c’è una giustificazione possono dimostrarsi pietosi. Se avete confessato qualcosa, dopo ritrattate tutto, dite di aver balbettato sotto tortura. Non sapevate quello che dicevate. Se venite condannati, non abbiate timore. La Fratellanza è potente. Potranno aiutarvi a fuggire, se vi mostrerete ben saldi.
Se rivelerete qualsiasi segreto, non vi sarà per voi alcuna speranza in questa vita, né in quella che verrà.
Statene certi. Seppure ben risoluti andrete al rogo, vi faranno avere della Belladonna, non sentirete nulla. Andrete incontro soltanto alla Morte ed a ciò che c’è dietro. L’estasi della Dea.
E’ probabile che riusciate ad avere della Belladonna prima di essere torturati. Ricordate sempre che i Cristiani temono sopra qualsiasi altra cosa il morire sotto tortura. Al primo segno di deliquio cercano di interromperla, e se la prendono con i torturatori, per cui questi tendono a fingere di torturare, senza farlo davvero, perciò è meglio non morire subito.
Se riuscite ad avere la Belladonna, ciò significa che avete un amico, da qualche parte. Potreste essere aiutati ad evadere, perciò, non disperate. Se verrà il peggio ed andrete al rogo, attendete finche le fiamme ed il fumo cominciano a salire, piegate il capo e respirate a fondo, soffocherete e morirete dolcemente, risvegliandovi nelle braccia della Dea.
Per non essere scoperti, fate in modo che i vostri strumenti (magici) di lavoro siano oggetti comuni che chiunque può avere in casa. Che i pentacoli siano di cera, per poter essere distrutti facilmente. Non dovete possedere una spada, a meno che il vostro rango non ve lo permetta. Non contrassegnate nulla con nomi o simboli.
Scrivete nomi e simboli sugli strumenti con l’inchiostro prima di consacrarli e lavateli immediatamente dopo. Non seppelliteli, potrebbero venir scoperti. Che sia il colore dell’impugnatura a dire cosa sono. Ricordate sempre che siete i Figli Segreti degli Dei, perciò non fate mai nulla che possa disonorarli.
Non vantatevi, non minacciate, non dite mai di volere il male di qualcuno. Se voi o altri, al di fuori del Cerchio, parlano dell’arte, dite “Non dirmi nulla, ho paura di tutto questo. Porta sfortuna parlarne”. Per questo motivo, i Cristiani hanno spie dappertutto, che parlano come se fossero davvero interessate, come se volessero partecipare agli Incontri, dicendo “Mia madre venerava gli Antichi. Io pure vorrei”. Di fronte a costoro negate qualsiasi conoscenza.
Piuttosto agli altri dite sempre, a questi sciocchi uomini che parlano di streghe volanti ‘Per farlo, devono essere leggere come soffioni di cardo e gli uomini dicono che le streghe sono tutte vecchiacce dagli occhi velati, perciò, che gusto potrebbe esserci nell’incontrarle? Tanto per parlarne un po’?” e dite “Molti uomini savi vanno dicendo che simili creature non esistono”. Scherzateci sempre su e in futuro, a un certo momento, forse la persecuzione cesserà e noi potremo di nuovo venerare (gli Dei) in sicurezza. Preghiamo tutti perché giunga quel giorno felice.
Possano le benedizioni della Dea e del Dio ricadere su tutti coloro che compiono la loro Volontà.
Se dall’Arte viene un qualsiasi appannaggio, che tutti I fratelli lo custodiscano e contribuiscano a mantenerlo integro e vantaggioso per l’Arte e che tutti vigilino con equità su tutto il denaro dell’Arte. Ma se alcuni fratelli lo hanno davvero guadagnato, è giusto che ne ricevano ricompensa e che ciò non significhi trarre profitto dalla pratica dell’Arte, ma derivi da un lavoro buono ed onesto. Ed anche i Cristiano dicono “Un lavoratore è degno del suo salario”. Ma qualora un fratello operi volenterosamente per il bene dell’Arte senza compenso, ciò gli procurerà un onore ancora maggiore. Così sia.
Se vi è una qualsiasi disputa o lite tra I fratelli, l’Alta Sacerdotessa riunirà direttamente gli Anziani ed faranno luce sulla faccenda, dando ascolto ad entrambe le parti, prima separatamente, poi insieme. E decideranno equamente, senza favorire l’una parte o l’altra.
Bisogna pur sempre riconoscere che vi sono persone che non accetteranno mai di lavorare sottoposte ad altri, ed al contempo che vi sono persone incapaci di governare con giustizia. Per coloro che ritengono di dover essere capi, vi è una risposta; lasciate la Congrega o createne un’altra, portando con voi coloro che lo desiderano. Per coloro che non riescono a governare con giustizia, la risposta sia: quelli che non sopportano la vostra supremazia vi lasceranno, giacchè nessuno possa incontrare le persone con cui vi è discordanza, perciò chi non è d’accordo vada via da qui, perché l’Arte deve sempre sopravvivere. Così sia.
Negli antichi giorni in cui avevamo il potere, potevamo usare l’Arte contro chiunque maltrattasse un appartenente alla Fratellanza. Ma in questi Giorni Malvagi non possiamo, poiché i nostri nemici hanno concepito una tomba ardente di perenne fuoco in cui essi dicono che il loro Dio getta tutti coloro che lo adorano, eccetto quei pochissimi che vengono assolti con le formule e le Messe dei loro preti e ciò si ottiene soprattutto donando denaro e ricchi doni poiché il loro Dio Supremo ha sempre bisogno di soldi.
Ma, come I nostri Dei hanno bisogno del nostro aiuto per donare fertilità agli uomini e alle messi, così il Dio dei Cristiani ha sempre bisogno di uomini che lo aiutino a cercarci e distruggerci. I loro preti dicono che chiunque riceva il nostro aiuto o le nostre cure sarà dannato per l’eternità, così gli uomini sono terrorizzati. Ma li convincono anche che possono sfuggire a questo inferno se portano vittime ai torturatori. Ecco perché stanno sempre a spiare, pensando di poter evitare questa fossa crudele se riescono a catturare uno Wica.
Ma noi abbiamo I nostri nascondigli e gli uomini, cercando a lungo senza trovare nulla, dicono “Non ce ne sono o, se ve ne sono, abitano molto lontano da qui”. Però, se uno dei nostri oppressori muori, oppure è malato, allora gridano “Questa è opera di una Strega” e la caccia ricomincia e se dieci di loro vengono ammazzati, per uno dei nostri, non se ne curano, ne hanno molte migliaia, mentre noi siamo pochi.
Così sia, che nessuno usi l’Arte in alcun modo per danneggiare chicchessia, per quanto essi ci feriscano. Ed a lungo abbiamo obbedito a questa legge “Non danneggiare nessuno” e a d oggi molti credono che non esistiamo neppure. Così sia, che questa legge continui ad aiutarci nella nostra difficile situazione “Nessuno, per quanto grande sia il danno o l’offesa che ha ricevuto, può usare l’Arte per fare del male o danneggiare chicchessia”.
Però potete, dopo grandi consultazioni con tutti gli altri, usare l’Arte per prevenire o trattenere I Cristiani dal danneggiare noi o altri, ma solo per confinarli o meno e mai per punire. A questo scopo, gli uomini dicono “Una tale persona è un nostro grande cercatore e persecutore di Anziane Donne che egli giudica Streghe e nessuna gli ha fatto del male, il che dimostra che non possono o che, più verosimilmente, non ve n’è alcuna”. Giacchè tutti sanno molto bene che moltissime persone sono morte a causa del rancore di qualcuno verso un altro, o che sono state perseguitate a causa delle loro ricchezze o dei loro beni o perché non avevano nulla per corrompere i cercatori. E molte sono morte solo per essere anziane donne brontolone, a tal punto che ora gli uomini dicono che solo le Donne Vecchie sono streghe.
E questo va a nostro vantaggio ed allontana da noi il sospetto. In Inghilterra ormai sono passati molti anni da quando una strega è stata uccisa, ma qualsiasi uso improprio del potere può suscitare di nuovo la Persecuzione. Dunque non infrangete mai questa legge, sebbene siate tentati e non permettete mai che venga infranta e se venite a sapere che vi si è contravvenuto, dovete porvi in opposizione con forza e qualunque Alta Sacerdotessa o Alto Sacerdote che lo abbia consentito deve venire immediatamente deposto. Giacché è il Sangue stesso della Fratellanza che mettono a repentaglio.
Fate il bene, e con prudenza, e solo se siete al sicuro, poiché qualunque chiacchiera può metterci in pericolo. E seguite rigorosamente l’Antica Legge, non accettate mai denaro per usare il Potere, poiché sempre il denaro sporca chi lo prende. Sono i Carcerieri e gli Illusionisti ed i Preti di Cristo che accettano sempre denaro in cambio della loro Arte e vendono Belladonna e malvagi incanti d’amore e indulgenze per consentire agli uomini di sfuggire ai propri peccati. Non siate come loro. “Non siate come loro”. Se non accetterete denaro sarete liberi dalla tentazione di usare il potere per scopi perversi. Tutti possono usarlo a proprio vantaggio, o per favorire l’Arte, solo se sicuri di non danneggiare alcuno. Ma bisogna che la Congrega discuta la questione a fondo e solo se tutti sono convinti che nessuno verrà danneggiato, allora il Potere può essere usato. Se non vi è possibile raggiungere i vostri scopi senza fare del male a nessuno, fate di trovare un’altra strada per ottenere ciò che volete, che non rechi danno. Possa la maledizione della Dea ricadere su chiunque infranga questa legge. Così sia.
É lecito, se qualcuno ha bisogno di una casa e nessuno vuole venderla, instillare nella mente dei proprietari la disposizione e la volontà di vendere, badando che questo non costituisca uno svantaggio per nessuno e che venga corrisposto l’intera cifra dovuta, snza mercanteggiare. Non contrattate né cercate di ottenere a basso costo ciò che acquistate attraverso il Potere
Così sia.
É l’Antica Legge e la più importante di tutte le Leggi, che nessuno faccia o dica nulla che possa mettere a repentaglio chi appartiene all’Arte o possa condurlo davanti ai rappresentati della legge del paese in cui vive o quella della Chiesa o ad alcuno dei nostri persecutori. In qualsiasi controversia tra fratelli, nessuno mai invochi una legge che non sia quella dell’Arte, o un Tribunale che non sia quello della Sacerdotessa, del Sacerdote e degli Anziani. E possa la maledizione della Dea ricadere su chiunque si comporti così.
Così sia.
Non è proibito dire, come fanno i Cristiani “Vi è Stregoneria in questo Paese”, poiché i nostri oppressori hanno definito un’eresia non credere nella Stregoneria ed è quindi un crimine negarne l’esistenza, cosa che farebbe quindi sospettare di voi. Ma dite sempre “Non ho mai saputo di streghe qui, probabilmente ci sono, ma lontano, non so dove” e parlate sempre in modo da suscitare negli altri il dubbio su dove siano. Parlate sempre di loro come di brutte vecchiacce, che si legano al Diavolo e cavalcano in cielo. Ma dite sempre “Come possono gli uomini volare, a meno che non siano lievi come soffioni?” e possa la maledizione della dea abbattersi su chiunque porti sospetto su qualcuno che appartiene alla Fratellanza, o parli di veri luoghi di incontro o indichi il luogo in cui qualcuno di noi vive. Così sia.
Fate in modo di avere libri con I nomi di tutte le Erbe utili all’uomo e tutte le cure, che chiunque possa consultare. Ma tenete un altro libro che contenga i ogni tipo di Veleno, di cui siano a conoscenza solo gli Anziani e le persone degne di fiducia. Così sia.
E possano le benedizioni degli Dei ricadere su coloro che osserveranno queste Leggi e le maledizioni del Dio e della Dea abbattersi su chi le infrangerà. Così sia.

The Law was made and Ardane of old. The law was made for the Wica, to advise and help in their troubles.
The Wica should give due worship to the Gods & obey their will which they Ardane, for it was made for the good of the Wica. As the Wicas worship is good for the Gods.
For the Gods love the Wica, as a man loveth a woman by mastering her. So the Wica should love the Gods, by being mastered by them. And it is necessary that the Circle, which is the Temple of the Gods, should be truely cast and purified, that it may be a fit place for the Gods to enter.
And the Wica should be properly prepared and purified, to enter into the presence of the Gods. With love and worship in their hearts they shall raise powrer from their bodies to give power to the Gods, as has been tought us of old.
For in this way only may man have communion with the Gods, for the Gods cannot help man without the help of men.
And the High Priestess shall rule her Coven as representative of the Goddess, and the High Priest shall support her as the representative of the God. And the High Priestess shall choose whom she will, if he have sufficient rank, to be her High Priest.
For the God himself, kissed her feet in the 5 fold salute, laying his power at the feet of the Goddess. because of her youth & beauty, her sweetness & kindness, her wisdom & Justice, her humility & generosity, So he resigned his lordship to her, But the Priestess should ever mind that all power comes from him. It is only lent when it is used wisely and justly. And the greatest virtue of a High Priestess is that she recognises that youth is necessary to the representative of the Goddess, so that she will retire gracefully in favour of a younger woman, Should the Coven so decide in Council. For the true High Priestess realsies that gracefully surendering pride of place is one of the greatest of virtues, and that thereby she will return to that pride of place in another life, with greater power beauty.
ln the days when Witchdom extended far, we were free and worshipd in Alther Greatest Tempels. But, in these unhapy times we must hold our sacred mysteries in secret.
So it be Ardane, that none but the Wica may see our mysteries. for our enimies are many, And torture looseth the tongues of many. lt be ardane that each Coven shall not know where the next Coven bide, or who its members are. save the Priest and Priestess. That there shall be no communication between them. save by the Messenger of the Gods. or the Summoner. Only if it be safe, may the Covens meet, in some safe place. For the great festavals. And while there, none shall say whence thay come, or give their true names.
To the end that if any are tortured, in their agoney, they can not tell if they know not.
So it be Ardane that no one may tell any not of the Craft who be of the Wica. nor give any names, or where they Byde, or in any way tell anything which can betray any to our foes. Nor may they tell where the Covenstead be. or where is the Covendom. or where be the meetings. or that there have been meetings. And if any break these laws, even under torture, The Curse of the Goddess shall be upon them, so they never be reborn on earth, And may the remain where they belong, in the Hell of the Christians.
Let each High Priestess govern her Coven with Justice and love. with the help of the advice of the elders. Always heading the advice of the Messenger of the Gods. lf he cometh.
She will heed all complaints of brothers, And strive to settle all differances among them. But it must be recognized that there be people who will ever strive to force others to do as they will.
They are not necesseraly evil. & they often do have good ideas. andt such ideas should be talked over in council. And if they will not agree with their brothers, or if they say, I will not work under this High Priestess, lt hath always been the old law, to be convenient for the bretherin, and to void disputes, Any of the Third may claim to found a new Coven because they live over a league from the Covenstead, or that they are about to do so. Anyone living within the Covendom wishing to form a new Coven, to avoid strife, shall tell the Elders of his intention And on the instant void his dwelling and remove to the new Covendom. Members of the old Coven may join the New one when it be formed, but if they do, must utterly void the old Coven. The Elders of the New and the Old Covens should meet in peace and brotherly love, to decide the new bounderies.
Those of the Craft who dwell outside both Covendoms may join either indifferent, but not both. Though all may, if the Elders agree, meet for the Great Festavals, if it be truely in peace and brotherly love. But splitting the Coven oft means strife. So for this reason these laws were made of old. And may the curse of the GODDESS be on any who disreguard them. So be it Ardane.
lf you would keep a book, let it be in your own hand of write, let brothers and sisters copy what they will, but never let the book out of your hands, and never keep the writings of another, for if it be found in their hard of write, they well may be taken and Engined.
Each should guard his own writings & destroy it whenever danger threatens. Learn as much as you may by heart, & when danger is past, rewirit your book, an it be safe. For this reason, if any die, destroy their book if they have not been able to. For an it be found, tis clear proof against them, And, our oppressors well know, "Ye may not be a witch alone" So all their kin & friends be in danger of torture. So ever destroy anything not necessary. If your book be found on you. tis clear proof against you alone. You may be engined. Keep all thouqhts of the Craft from your mind. Say you had bad dreams, a devil caused you to write it without your knowledge. Think to yourself. I know, nothing. I remember nothing. I have forgotten everything. Drive this into your mind.
If the torture be to great to bear. Say, I will confess. I cannot bear this torture, What do you want me to say? I will say it. if they try to make you speak of the brotherhood, Do NOT. But if they try to make you speak of imposabilaties such as flying through the air, Consorting with the Christian Devil, or sacrificing children, or eating mens flesh. To obtain relief from torture. say. I had an evil dream, I was not myself. I was crased.
Not all Magestrates are bad, if there be an excuse they may show mercy. If you have confessed aught, deny it afterwards, say you babbled under torture. You knew not what you said. If you are condemed, fear not. The Brotherhood is powerfull. They may help you to escape, if you stand steadfast.
If you betray aught. There is no hope for you, ln this life, or in that which is to come.
Be sure. if steadfast you go to the pyre, Dwale will reach you, you will feel naught. You go but to Death and what lies beyond. The ecstacy of the Goddess.
Tis probable that before you are engined, Dwale will reach you. Always remember that Christians fear much that any die under torture. At the first sign of swoon, they cause it to be stopped, and blame the tormenters, for that reason, the tormenters themselves are apt to feign to torment, but do not, so it is best not to die at first.
lf Dwale reaches you, tis a sign that you have a friend somwhere. you may be helped to escape, so dispair not. If the worst comes, and you go to the pyre. wait till the flames and smoke spring up, bend your head over, & breath in with long brewths, you choke & die swiftly. & wake in the arms of the Goddess.
To void discovery, Let the working tools be as ordinary things that any may have in their houses. Let the Pentacles be of wax, so they may be broken at once. Heve no sword unless your rank allows you one. Have no names or signs on anything.
Write the names and signes on them in ink before consecrating them and wash it off immediatly after. Do not Bigrave them. lest they cause discovery. Let the colour of the hilts tell which is which. Ever remember, ye are the Hidden Children of the Gods. So never do anything to disgrace them.
Never boast, Never threaten, Never say you would wish Ill to anyone. lf you or any, not in the Circle, speak of the craft, say, "Speak not to me of such, it frightens me. tis evil luck to speak of it" For this reason. The Christians have spies everywhere. These speak as if they were well affected, as if they would come to Meetings, saying "My mother used to go, to worship, the Old Ones. I would that I could go myself." To these ever deny all knowledge.
But, to others ever say, tis foolish, men talk of witches flying through the air, to do so, they must be light as thistledown. and. Men say that witches all be bleared eyed old crones, so what pleasure can there be in witch meetings? such as folk talk on? Say, Many wise men now say there be no such creatures. Ever make it a jest, and in some future time, perhaps the persecution will die. and we may worship safely again. let us all pray for that happy day.

lf the Craft hath any Appenage, let all brothers guard it, and help to keep it clear and good for the Craft, & let all justly guard all monies of the Craft. But if some brothers truely wrought it, Tis right that they have their pay, an it be just. And this be not taking money for the use of the Art. but for good and honest work. And even the Christians say "A labourer is worthey of his hire." But if any brothers work willingly for the good of the craft without pay, tis but to their greater honour. So it be Ardane.
lf there be any disputes or quarrels among the bretheren, The High Priestess shall straight Convene the Elders & enquire into the matter, and they shall hear both sides. first alone. then together. And they shall decide justly, not favouring the one side or the other.
Ever recognising that there be people who can never agree to work under others. but at the same time there be some people who cannot rule justly. To those who ever must be chief, there is one answer, Void the Coven & seek another, or, make a Coven of your own, taking with you those who will to go, To those who cannot rule justly. The answer be. those who cannot bear your rule will leave you, For none may come to meetings with those with whom they are at variance. So an either cannot agree. get hence. For the Craft must ever survive. So it be Ardane.
In the olden days when we had power, we could use our Arts against any who illtreated any of the Brotherhood. But in these Evil Times, we may not do so, For our enimies have devised a burning pit of everlasting fire, into which they say their God casteth all the people who worship him, except it be the very few who are released by their priestes spells and Masses. and this be chiefly by giving money and rich gifts to recieve his favour, for their Alther Greatest God is ever in need of Money.
But as our Gods need our aid to make fertility for men and crops. So the God of the Christians is ever in need of mans help to search out and destroy us. Theyir priests tell them that any who get our help or our cures are dammned to this Hell forever, so men be mad for the terror of it,. But they make men believe that they may scape this hell if they give victims to the tormenters. So for this reason. All be forever spying, thinking an I can but catch one of the Wica I will scape this fiery pit.
But we have our hidels, and men searching long and not finding say, "there be none, or lf they be, they be in a far country." But, when one of our oppressors die. or, even be sick, ever is the cry "This be Witches Malice." and the hunt is up again. and though they slay ten of their people, to one of ours, still. they care not, they have many thousands, while we are few indeed.
So it is Ardane, that none shall use the Art in any way to do ill to any. how evermuch they have injured us. And for long we have obeyed this law. "Harm none" and nowtimes, many believe we exist not. So it be Ardane that this law shall still continue to help us in our plight. "No one, however great an injury or injustace they recieve, may use the Art in any to do ill or harm any."
But, they may, after great consulations with all, use the Art to prevent or restrain Christians from harming us and others. but only to let or constrain them and never to punish. To this end. Men say, "Such an one is a mighty searcher our and persecutor of Old Women whom he deemeth to be Witches. and none hath done him Skith. so this be proof they cannot, or more truely, that there be none." For all know full well, that so many folk have died because somone had a grudge against them, or were persecuted because they had money or goods to sieze. or because they had none to bribe the searchers. And many have died because they were scolding old women. So much so, that men now say that only Old Women are witches.
And this be to our advantage, and turns suspicion away from us. ln England tis now many it year since a witch hath died the death. but any misuse of the power might raise the Persecution again. So never break this law, however much you are tempted. and never consent to its being broken, lf you know it is being broken in the least, you must work strongly against it, And any High Priestess or High Priest who consentes to it must be immediatly deposed. For tis the Blood of the Bretherin they endanger.
Do good, an it be safe, and only if it be safe, for any talk may endanger us. And strictly keep to the Old Law, never accept money for the use of the Art, for money ever smeares the taker, Tis Carcerors and Conjurers and Priests of Christ who ever accept money for the use of their Arts. and they sell Dwale and evil love spells and pardons to let men scape from their sins. Be not as these. "Be not as these" lf you accept not money, you will be free of temptation to use the Art for evil causes. All may use the Art for your own advantage, or for the advantage of the Craft, only if you be sure you harm none. But ever let the Coven debate the matter at length, only if all are satisfied that none may be harmed may the Art be used. lf it is not possible to achieve your ends one way without harming any, pervhance the aim may be achieved by acting in a different way, so as to harm none. May the Curse of the Goddes, be on any who breach this law. So It be ardane.
Tis adjudged lawful an anyone need a house or land, an none will sell. to incline the owners mind to be willing to sell, provided it harmeth him not in any way, & that the full worth is paid, without haggling. Never bargain or cheepen anything which you buy by the Art.
So it be Ardane.
lt is the Old Law and the most important of all Laws, That no one may do or say anything which will endanger any of the Craft, or bring them in contact with the law of the land. or the Law of the Church or any of our persecutors. ln any disputes between the bretheren, no one may invoke any laws but those of the Craft. or any Tribunal but that of the Priestess and the Priest and the Elders. And mat the Curse of the Goddess be on any who so do.
So it be Ardane.
lt is not forbiden to say as Christians do. "There be Witchcraft in the Land" Because out oppressors of old made it Heresy not to believe in Witchcraft, & so a crime to deny it. which thereby put you under suspicion. But ever say I know not of it here, perchance they may be, but afar off. I know not where. but ever speak so you cause others to doubt they be as they are Always speak of them as Old Crones, consorting with the Devil and riding through the air. But ever say, but how may men ride through the air an they be not as light as Thistle Down? But the Curse of the Goddess be on any who cast any suspicion on any of the Brotherhood. or speaks of any real meeting place. or where any byde. So it be Ardane.
Let the Craft keep books with the names of all Herbs which are good for man. and all cures, that all may learn. But keep another book with all the Banes & Apies. & let only the Elders and trustworthy people have this knowledge. So it be Ardane.
And may the Blessings of the Gods be on all who keep these. Laws and the Curses of both God and Goddess be on all who break them. So it be Ardane.
